A Family Affair
A mother’s—and grandmother’s—delight is precious time spent with her family, the beautiful flowers she tended for so long. On Mother’s Day, gather your family, both young and young at heart, for a floral fete honoring Mom. Get the kids involved with creating a special dessert and a colorful tablescape. The light fare of salads and bread sticks is kid-friendly and perfect for a weekend luncheon.
Accent Pieces
Create a lovely paper flower chain to decorate chairs. Fold a coffee filter in half, then in half again. Pinch the point of the triangle, then open and fluff the top to look like flower petals. Using your pliers, cut a piece of floral stem wire in half. Attach it to the base of the flower with floral stem tape. Fold a small piece of green crepe paper in half, and tape it to the base of the flower. Repeat this process until you have about 10 to 12 flowers. Spray flowers with various colors of dye. Twist loops into several lengths of floral stem wire every 4 inches (when pinched, these will hold the flowers), then connect the wire lengths to form a chain. Alternating the colored flowers, place them in the rings. Weave a length of green crepe paper through the entire chain to cover the floral wire. Drape the wire over chair backs, using additional wire as needed to secure.
Centerpiece
Make flowers and leaves from crepe paper and coffee filters. Use your creations to fill tubs and buckets (fill them with dry oasis and push the flower stems into the oasis until the tub or bucket is full), make a flower chain, and embellish place markers. The best part? The flowers last for days and don't need watering! Added stem photo holders to the bucket. Cut a floral stem wire in half. Cut two pieces of crepe paper. From each of these two pieces, cut a simple leaf shape. Using floral stem tape, tape one corner of the two leaves to the cut wire. Wrap two pieces of uncut wire with another piece of wire to create a strong length of three strands. Using the pliers, twist one end of the three-strand wire and pinch together. Attach the wired leaf to the three-strand wire. Follow steps 1 through 3 to create stems to serve as photo holders, looping the end to create a paper clip. Slip family photos, mounted on card stock with two-sided tape, into the loops and pinch together to secure.
